For those parents who find it hard to get creative with their kids' lunches, there is a new tool available that you won't find in your kitchen that will help get the job done faster.
A North Vancouver entrepreneur has made it possible for schools to put together delicious noontime meals in five minutes.
"Every parent breathes a big sigh when it comes to making lunches," says Barbara Talbot, founder of MunchaLunch, an online hot lunch ordering system for elementary, middle and high school students. "I think we all look forward to a break from it."
If your child's school is a participating member of the program, you can simply visit your school's website and find the link for MunchaLunch.
Schools decide which local food suppliers they wish to use, and put the menus and pricing online for ordering. Schools usually offer plenty of choices including wraps, sandwiches, pizza, hamburgers, and pasta. There are also healthy snacks and drinks that can be offered to supplement these meals such as oatmeal cookies, fruit salad, and milk.
"There are easy steps to follow," advises Talbot. "Register an account, add your children, and begin ordering."
To help schools even more, there is a Fundraising module included in the program which enables schools to set up everything from online donations to spring plants for sale.
"Proceeds from lunch programs go directly back to the school PAC to help fund much-needed school programs and equipment," explains Talbot. "Munch helps schools maximize these proceeds."
Traditionally, school lunch programs are paper-based systems that are labour intensive for both the school lunch coordinators and the parents themselves, says Talbot.
"Ordering and paying online eliminates the need for paper order forms and avoids calculation errors," she said. "Instead of lunch coordinators spending hours with paper forms, they can now generate all reports at the click of a button."
There are currently over 1000 schools from across Canada on board with MunchaLunch. According to Talbot, the plan is to attract even more schools to the program to make school lunch programs and fundraising easy and seamless to administer!

MunchaLunch, a widely embraced solution in schools across Canada, is revolutionizing school lunch programs and fundraising by simplifying the management of hot lunch programs for Admins and making it easy for parents to order and pay online. Our platform allows schools to significantly expand the frequency of hot lunch dates offered along with providing an easy way to put all other fundraising activities online! That in turn brings in more funding for much needed programs and equipment for the children such as iPads, musical instruments, and new playgrounds.
Munch is a web-based program so all you need is a modern browser and access to the internet!
Each family creates a MunchaLunch family account by clicking the MunchaLunch Registration link (provided by the school), enters their email address and a personal password, adds children to their account, and then places their order.
Orders can be placed using a desktop, laptop, iPad or cell phone. If a parent does not have any of these devices, perhaps they can borrow a friend's computer for 5 minutes to place their order. Alternatively, the parent could be provided with a hard copy order form (a document which can be downloaded by the Lunch Admin) and the Lunch Admin would then create the parent account on the parent's behalf and enter the order into MunchaLunch.
Easy. Once they have created the order for their first child they simply select "choose another child" and Munch will take them back to the beginning of the order system so that they can create their order for the additional child.
The MunchaLunch system sends an automated email which includes a copy of the order. Parents can also login to their account anytime and download/save their order (and/or print a hard copy of their order).
Munch generates Class Distribution reports which include each child's name and specific order. These lists will accompany the complete food order that gets delivered to the classrooms and will be used to distribute the food.
MunchaLunch works with Stripe (as the credit card payment processor) and the large majority of parents will pay online using their credit card or debit-credit card. It's fast, easy, and secure. However, it's possible for you to also offer the cheque or cash payment option to parents and then enter those payments in the system (to credit the parent account).

Orders are placed separately for each child but the 'payment due' is presented as a lump-sum.
No, MunchaLunch does not sell food. The system allows school lunch and fundraising coordinators to set up their program online and allows families to place orders online. Coordinators can select any preferred local food vendors and other suppliers and enter those suppliers in the system.
No, there is no limit — it is completely up to the Lunch Coordinator. Munch can handle as much as you would like to enter.
They can easily reset it by clicking 'Forgot Password' on the MunchaLunch Login page — a secure reset link arrives at the family account email address in seconds.
